Background Information

Hoya Carnosa, also called the Wax Plant, is a hardy trailing plant with thick, waxy leaves and clusters of star-shaped, fragrant flowers. A symbol of love and lasting friendship, it is long-lived and very low-maintenance. It prefers bright indirect light.

Watering, Humidity and Ventilation

Water when the soil is mostly dry; this succulent-like plant stores water in its leaves and dislikes soggy soil. Tolerates average to low humidity and indoor conditions. Ideal for hanging planters, shelves, and bright windowsills.

Hoya Carnosa - Care FAQs

How much light does my Hoya Carnosa need?

Hoya Carnosa loves bright, indirect light, and gentle morning sun encourages blooming.
Ideal: 2 to 3 hours of bright, filtered light
Tolerates: Medium light (slower growth, fewer flowers)
Avoid: Harsh afternoon sun, which can scorch leaves
Tip: Enough bright light is the key to getting your Hoya to flower.

How often should I water my Hoya Carnosa?

Let the top half of the soil dry out between waterings.
Water roughly once a week or when soil feels dry, reduce watering in winter and always allow excess water to drain out fully.

Important: Overwatering is the most common cause of root rot in Hoyas.

When should I repot my Hoya Carnosa?

Hoyas like to be slightly root-bound and bloom better that way. Repot every 6 months to 1 year, or when very root-bound
Best time: spring
Use an airy, well-draining mix (cocopeat + perlite + bark or orchid mix).

Do I need to fertilize my Hoya Carnosa?

Yes, during the growing season.
Use a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength and feed about once a month (spring–monsoon), also a high-phosphorus feed supports blooming.
Reduce or stop in winter
Tip: Flush the soil occasionally to remove fertilizer buildup.

Can I use tap water to water my Hoya Carnosa?

Tap water is usable, but not ideal.
Let water sit for 12–24 hours before use or use filtered / RO / rainwater when possible

Note: Mineral salts may cause spotting on the waxy leaves over time.

Will my Hoya Carnosa grow bigger over time?

Yes — it develops long trailing or climbing vines.
Produces more thick, waxy leaves over time and forms flower spurs (peduncles) that re-bloom each season

Important: Never remove the old flower spurs — new blooms grow from the same spot.

Is my Hoya Carnosa safe for pets?

Generally non-toxic to cats and dogs.
Still discourage chewing, large ingestion may cause mild digestive upset.
Keep out of easy reach of pets and small children.

Why are the leaves of my Hoya Carnosa changing colour?

Leaf changes usually point to a care issue:
-Yellow leaves: Overwatering or too little light
-Wrinkled or soft leaves: Underwatering or root issues
-Brown spots: Sunburn from harsh light
-Pale leaves: Nutrient deficiency or low light
Review watering, light, and soil conditions.

Does my Hoya Carnosa need humidity?

It prefers moderate humidity but adapts well indoors.
Ideal range: 50–70% humidity
Higher humidity improves growth and blooming.
Mist lightly, use a pebble tray, or a humidifier. Avoid constant dampness, which invites fungus.
